About the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day
The aim of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital gap between Nations.
17 May marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union.
Theme 2018: Enabling the positive use of Artificial Intelligence for All
Enabling the positive use of Artificial Intelligence for All was the theme of WTISD-18 which mainly focus on the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to accelerate the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In recent years there has been significant progress in AI technology, made possible by tremendous advances in contributing fields, such as Big Data, machine learning, computing power, storage capacity and cloud computing, among others.
AI-based technologies are already emerging as a key component of proactive tools and applications being used to help people lead better lives by improving healthcare, education, finance, agriculture, transportation, and a wide range of other services.
The 2018 theme will allow ITU Membership and other key stakeholders to focus on the opportunities for how AI can help accelerate the achievement of the SDGs by 2030.
World Telecommunication Day at University of Punjab, Lahore.
IEEE Communication Society and Department of Electrical Engineering Punjab University Lahore had organized the World Telecom Day 2018 on 16th May,2018 Wednesday.
The World Telecommunication Day celebrates the constant evolution of one of the most important factors of our lives: communication.
Foreign and Pakistani Experts on Telecommunication Technologies from various industry and academia had participated in the event. Dignities from Telecom Sectors of Pakistan were also participated.The schedule for the World Telecom Day is given below:

Dr. Momin Uppal Professor LUMS continued his talk on World Telecom day about the Use of AI and Machine Learning in Telecommunication.
After a brief talk on Use of AI and Machine Learning in Telecommunication he used to end the conversation with an ending note.
“Deep Learning and Machine Learning is sort of Alchemy.Who thought that anything can be converted into Gold and spent their entire lives in experimenting this. So the Modern Day Alchemy is Machine Learning. You just apply it without knowing Why it works and you just do it. & this “Why” portion needs to be encouraged. I would encourage you to work on that “Why”. Thanks”
Dr. Syed Atif Mehdi Jaffri Professor UCP
Dr. SA Mehdi presented his research work on Use of Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture. He made a Octa-Copter which not only detect the unhealthy plants and pest in the crops but also spray the Pesticides Chemicals needed for that particular disease using Machine learning and AI to detect those pest and unhealthy plants. He obtained the highest Yield of Strawberry and Gladiolus. The Industrial Partner in Research Collaboration is GreenWorks for implementing this technology in Pakistan.

Mr. Hassan Ali Head of Network Operations Center | OSS Jazz Pakistan | Telecommunications presented his talk about the Evolution of Telecom Industry & the future Oppertunities in Pakistan also give a brief presentaion on Use of AI in Telecommunication at World Telecom Day.
At the end of the Seminar there was a cake cutting ceremony to celebrate the World Telecom Day 2018 also souvenirs were given to the distinguished guests from Kashif Bashir Chair IEEE COMSOC Lhr Sect &Manager Huawei UET Telecom and IT Center at University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore
